Black Rio Tee
101 Apparel was created by designer Eric Crandell in 2006 as a way to seamlessly bridge the gap between art, music, and fashion. 101 Apparel derives inspiration from a global palette of sonic vibrations - from afro beat to disco, Brazilian samba, bossa nova and tropicalia, to the vast universe of electronic music, hip-hop, funk, soul, reggae, jazz and beyond. The reverent appreciation of not only these sounds, but also the artists and their craft are the driving forces behind the 101 aesthetic.
The Afro-Brazilian culture which facilitated the black soul movement in Rio de Janeiro is known as “Black Rio.” They actually used the term ‘black’ to signify specifically this kind of cosmopolitan, urban culture that had its origins in the soul-culture of the United States in the 1960s and ’70s, inspired by artist like James Brown and Barry White to name a few.
This poster print shows the main artists that formed the movement during the mid 70’s Black Rio Movement. Big Boy was at the forth from of it all, DJing the top parties and hosting the American artists when visiting Rio.
