Public Domain: The Tunnel Issue
Public Domain celebrates the misappropriation of public and private space through a bi-annual publication structured in thematic volumes. The topic of this issue is dedicated to the tunnel and its imaginary.
An urban or rural area becomes Public Domain when an emotional and empathic exchange between people occurs there; departing from the analysis of such episodes, this research aims to build connections, draw analogies, and underlining their social potential. No more streets, plazas or urban parks but infrastructural sites with a purely functional character; private land such as railway tracks, city rooftops, or physical boundaries, where contemporary communities are able to find distance from the usual program to develop new relations. The drive for a new context, through the power of activism, political movements, and youth struggle.
This project intends to delve into specific areas, already absorbed by the collective consciousness, which diverse social groups reinterpret and inhabit in cultural dialogue; where the terrain vague, or the city underground, magically becomes part of the public sphere; where amid surprise and improvisation the encounter with the other happens, nd shared experiences take shape.
